How the Three Route Types Work — and Why They Cost Differently

Every route in the app falls into one of three types. The type determines how traffic crosses borders, and that in turn drives both cost and how it holds up during peak hours. Once you understand the three types, picking a server stops being guesswork.

IEPL Dedicated Line

Dedicated Cross-Border Line

IEPL (International Ethernet Private Line) is a carrier-grade point-to-point private line built specifically for cross-border traffic. Data travels from the entry data center to the exit location over a dedicated physical link, never touching the public internet's international gateways — so it's immune to public peak-hour congestion, with minimal jitter and packet loss.

4K streaming, AI tools, video calls, and other scenarios where stability matters most
Cost
Highest of the three — dedicated bandwidth is billed at reserved capacity, well above public bandwidth rates

Relay

Optimized Relay Routing

Relay routes first connect to a relay server at a well-connected access point, which then forwards traffic to the destination server. The relay location is chosen to route around congested public segments, handing the cross-border leg off to a cleaner path. Stability sits between dedicated lines and direct connections — a solid balance of coverage and performance.

Everyday browsing, HD streaming, general work tasks — the default choice for most situations
Cost
Moderate — bandwidth costs stack across both the relay hop and the destination server

Direct

Direct Public Connection

Direct routes connect straight from your device to the destination server, with the entire cross-border leg riding the public internet's international gateways. It's the shortest, simplest path and performs well during off-peak hours, but public gateways can get congested during evening peak times, so performance varies more by time of day. Most routes to less common regions use this type.

Lowest — only one public bandwidth segment, at the destination server

All three route types appear together in the app — they're not tied to specific plan tiers and carry no extra charge. Your subscription's data usage is metered the same way regardless of which route you're on. Dedicated lines cost more to run, but that cost is already baked into the subscription price, not billed separately as you use the service.

Picking a Server by Use Case

Choosing a server comes down to two questions: what you're doing decides the route type, and where you want to land decides the region. Here are picks for five common use cases — all of these routes can be found by name directly in the app.

BROWSINGEveryday Browsing

Web pages, social media, and email are lightweight enough that route type barely matters — relay or direct both work fine. Use the app's automatic selection mode and let it pick based on live speed results; if choosing manually, favor cities that are physically closer (Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore) to avoid unnecessary detours.

STREAMINGStreaming & Movies

Check the streaming column in the table above first: pick a server located in the region whose library you want, with that service marked as supported — for Netflix's Japan catalog, choose Tokyo or Osaka; for the US catalog, choose Los Angeles or New York. If you can connect but can't watch, the server's location usually doesn't match the target region. Relay is fine for 1080p; 4K streaming needs sustained throughput, so go with an IEPL dedicated line to avoid quality drops during peak hours.

AI TOOLSAI Tools

Services like ChatGPT and Claude are picky about exit IP quality and region detection, and streaming responses need a stable, uninterrupted connection. Stick to one IEPL dedicated line (Los Angeles or Tokyo work well) and avoid switching servers often — frequent IP changes are a common trigger for risk flags. GAMINGOnline Gaming

Gaming performance comes down to jitter and packet loss, not just distance. Favor physically close Asia-Pacific servers (Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong), and prefer dedicated lines over relay, and relay over direct. Make sure UDP forwarding is enabled in the app. Don't switch servers mid-match — reconnecting will disconnect you from the game.

WORKRemote Work

Video calls and large file syncs push steady traffic in both directions, which demands more upload stability than casual browsing. Pick a relay or dedicated line near your meeting server's region (Frankfurt or San Jose for calls with Europe/US, Singapore or Tokyo for Asia-Pacific), and stick with the same server throughout your workday to avoid mid-call disruptions from switching routes.
